What You’ll Need

  • Front door paint: Use Exterior Eggshell for a mid-sheen finish or Full Gloss for a high-shine effect
  • Wood Primer & Undercoat: In the tone recommended for your topcoat
  • Sandpaper
  • Masking tape
  • 2" angled brush (or similar)

How to Paint Your Front Door

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

  • Remove all door hardware
  • Sand the surface and ensure it’s clean and dry
  • Apply masking tape around any glass panes

Tip: Start early in the day (or prep the night before) to allow for drying time before evening.

Step 2: Prime

  • Apply one coat of Wood Primer & Undercoat with your angled brush
  • Work in this order:
    1. Panels
    2. Central beam (muntin)
    3. Top rail
    4. Middle rail
    5. Bottom rail
    6. Side beams (stiles)
  • Let the primer dry completely

Step 3: Paint

  • Apply two coats of your chosen finish, following the same sequence as for priming
  • Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next
