How to paint furniture: upcycle with colour and style

Whether you’re aiming for a bold statement or a subtle refresh, painting furniture is a simple way to update your space. From dressers and chairs to tables and outdoor pieces, this guide shows you how to upcycle beautifully using our durable Modern Eggshell finish.

Ideas for Painted Furniture

Use Colour to Make a Statement

Bright shades can transform neutral interiors. Earthy tones like Bancha or Treron bring nature indoors, while bold colours like Arsenic create striking contrast.

Painting Children's Furniture

Add colour to a child’s space with painted furniture. Try using different colours on each drawer, or refresh toys with a new look. Our finishes meet Toy Safety Standards, so you can paint with confidence.

Blend Furniture into the Background

For a seamless look, paint furniture the same colour as your walls. This approach is ideal for small spaces. Examples include Hague Blue or Teresa’s Green used across both surfaces.

Paint Outdoor Furniture

Refresh garden furniture and create harmony between indoor and outdoor spaces using the same colour palette.

Step-by-Step: How to Paint Furniture

1. Prepare the Surface

  • Lightly sand to improve adhesion
  • Remove old, flaky paint and feather edges
  • Sand varnished surfaces to eliminate shine

2. Treat Resinous Knots

  • Scrape off excess resin, clean with white spirit, and allow to dry
  • Prime with Wood Primer & Undercoat where needed

3. Prime the Entire Piece

  • Apply one coat of Wood Primer & Undercoat in the correct tone
  • Let dry for 4 hours before painting

4. Paint the Furniture

  • Apply two coats of Modern Eggshell, allowing 4 hours between coats
